If you're planning a campervan conversion in Tasmania, the first question is almost always the same: how much is this going to cost? It's a fair question — and one that deserves a straight answer, not a vague "it depends" and a link to someone else's build on Instagram.
At Tasman Van Fitouts we've been hand-building campervans and van fitouts in Dodges Ferry for years. This guide breaks down realistic van conversion cost ranges for Tasmania, what actually drives the price up or down, and how to budget properly before you commit.
Typical campervan conversion costs in Tasmania (2026)
Every build is different, but most professional conversions fall into three size categories. These are starting points for a quality, roadworthy fitout — not bare-bones DIY budgets.
| Van size | Typical use | Starting from |
|---|---|---|
| Small wheel base (SWB) | Weekender, solo or couple | From $16,000 |
| Medium wheel base (MWB) | Everyday explorer, full kitchen & bed | From $25,000 |
| Long wheel base (LWB) | Full-time living, bathroom, big power | From $50,000 |
These figures cover the fitout itself — insulation, lining, cabinetry, electrical, plumbing and installation. They don't include the cost of buying the van, which is a separate line item we'll cover below.

What affects the price of a van conversion?
Two builds on the same model van can differ by tens of thousands of dollars. Here's what moves the needle most:
1. Van size and layout complexity
A compact SWB HiAce or short Transit is a smaller canvas — less cabinetry, simpler electrical, fewer metres of insulation. An LWB Sprinter or Crafter gives you room for a fixed bed, full galley, bathroom cubicle and serious off-grid power — but every extra square metre adds labour and materials.
2. Electrical and off-grid systems
A basic 12V setup with a lithium battery and roof solar might sit at the lower end. Add 200Ah+ lithium, an inverter, RedVision monitoring, exterior shower wiring and air conditioning, and the electrical package alone can add $5,000–$10,000 or more.
3. Plumbing, heating and comfort
Diesel heaters are almost essential for Tasmania — cold nights in the highlands and on the west coast are no joke. Hot water systems, extra water tanks and exterior showers each add cost but make a real difference to how you live in the van.
4. Troopy fitouts
Troopy fitout costs sit in their own category. A Toyota Landcruiser 78/79 Series has a unique footprint, and gull-wing windows, custom storage and 4x4-ready layouts all require specialist design. Expect these builds to be priced individually rather than off a standard wheelbase menu — but compact Troopy fitouts can still be remarkably efficient for remote travel. See our Troopy fitout work →
5. Compliance and certification
In Tasmania, your conversion needs to meet Australian Design Rules (ADR) if you want it registered as a campervan. That means roadworthy design, licensed electrical work where required, and sometimes engineering certification. A licensed RV manufacturer builds this in from the start — cutting corners here can cost you far more later.
What's included in a professional fitout?
At Tasman, every base conversion includes the essentials you'd expect from a proper build — not a weekend plywood job:
- Insulation and sound deadening throughout
- Floor, wall and ceiling lining
- Lightweight RV ply cabinetry with locking cupboards and soft-close drawers
- Bed platform or pull-out bed system
- 12V electrical with lithium battery and solar-ready setup
- LED lighting and USB charging
- Fresh water tank and pump
- Indoor kitchen with cooktop and sink
Extras like awnings, diesel heaters, hot water, air conditioning and bathroom cubicles are added on top — which is why two MWB builds at the same base price can end up $8,000 apart once options are chosen.
Don't forget: the van itself
Your fitout budget is only half the picture. A used VW Crafter, Ford Transit or Mercedes Sprinter in Tasmania might run anywhere from $25,000 to $80,000+ depending on age, kilometres and condition. Factor in:
- Vehicle purchase — often the largest single cost
- Pre-fitout work — rust treatment, mechanical checks, window deletes
- Registration and insurance — campervan insurance can differ from a standard commercial van policy
- Engineering certification — if required for campervan registration in your state
DIY vs professional conversion — the real comparison
DIY builds look cheaper on paper until you add up tools, mistakes, rework and the time you'd otherwise spend earning. A professional conversion in Tasmania gives you:
- Licensed RV manufacturing and ADR-compliant design
- Proper electrical and gas work by qualified trades
- Joinery that handles corrugations, salt air and Tassie winters
- A fixed quote and realistic timeline before work starts
We've seen plenty of vans arrive at the workshop halfway through a DIY attempt. Sometimes we finish them; sometimes it's cheaper to start fresh. Getting advice early — before you've cut a single hole — usually saves money.
How to get an accurate quote
Online ranges are useful for planning, but your actual quote depends on your van, your travel style and your must-haves. At Tasman Van Fitouts, the process looks like this:
- Play with the calculator — get a ballpark for your wheelbase and options
- Book a consultation — one-on-one with Harrison to assess your vehicle and discuss layout ($100, credited towards your build if you proceed)
- Receive a fixed quote — no surprise invoices halfway through
Price your van conversion in two minutes.
Use our cost calculator for a realistic starting point, then get in touch when you're ready to book a consultation and design session.
